I love Utah and its heritage.

Although the district boundary lines have changed over the course of 57 years, Utah House District 23 has always been my home. I grew up on Yalecrest Avenue, attended Bonneville Elementary School, Clayton Middle School, East High School, and graduated from the University of Utah. I met and married my wife Melissa, also a lifelong District 23 resident, and we bought our first home in the Sugar House area. Together, we raised our four children in the District where they each attended Dilworth Elementary School, Hillside Middle School, and Highland High School. Melissa, on multiple occasions, served in various capacities with our local PTA while I devoted time volunteering with youth athletics as a coach and board organization member. We love working and interacting with the incredible individuals who make up our community. My roots run deep in District 23!

Who knows District 23

One of my first jobs was as a substitute teacher in the Salt Lake City School District. I know how important a quality education is for our community and our children. I also know the frustrations of having no say or choice in what your child learns at school.

Eventually, I moved on from substitute teaching to pursue a career as a flight instructor and commercial pilot. I also worked for a time as a consultant in the telecommunications industry. I know the value and benefit of hard work and problem solving. But, I also know the pressures of raising a family, career changes, and worrying about having enough money to make ends meet.

Now, for over twenty years, I have owned and operated a local business in an industry of which I originally knew very little. I know what it takes to manage a budget and turn a profit. But I also know what it’s like when government bureaucrats decide your business is nonessential and mandate closing your doors.

I know how it feels when you’re told you can’t worship the way you wish. I know the stress of interpreting convoluted tax codes and burdensome regulations. And I know what it’s like when property taxes are three-times more than your monthly mortgage payment. I know because I actually work here. I know because I actually live here.

WHILE THINGS HAVE CHANGED – I’VE STAYED CONSISTENT

24 years ago, I ran for this same house seat and lost by 107 votes. Nearly a quarter-century later, I believe now, more than I did then, that it’s time for a change. It’s time for a different voice. It’s time for a voice that actually represents the constituency of District 23; not a voice for District 22 or 24, nor a voice for a particular class of people, a business, or the state. It’s time for a voice that truly represents the community that raised me.

I am asking for your help and your support in affecting that change in District 23.

Education

The family unit is inextricably tied to education because our children are our greatest assets. We must adequately fund education in order to best equip our children and their progeny to succeed in an increasingly technical and advanced world economy. Investing in our children is our best investment for the future.

Parents need to have a say in their child’s education. I support parental choice and the need for parents to not only choose where and how their tax dollars are spent, but where and how their child is educated.

Economy

I know how hard it is to start a business and make a living. But I also believe in the free market and the American dream. To ease your burden, I will always fight to keep fees and regulations at a minimum and will never be another government bureaucrat calling your business or job non-essential. I will fight to lower your taxes.

However, of the taxes you do pay, I will never forget that those dollars are the property of District 23 residents – that you worked and sacrificed to contribute to a government meant to serve you – and that I have a duty to be a wise steward of those entrusted tax dollars.
